Neil Margoles Published in the Rock Island Argus Sunday, Mar. 23, 2008 Neil Morris Margoles, surrounded by family, left this world Feb. 6, 2008, to join family and friends in a higher place.

Born May 29, 1941, in Milwaukee, Wis., to Bernard and Edith Rubaskin Margoles, he and his parents moved to Rock Island, where he attended school. Later, he was educated at University of Colorado, Augustana College, the University of Iowa and the University of California at Santa Barbara, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology.

He married Marnie Bennett Colehour in 1965. They divorced in 1970.

He worked at the Santa Barbara Research Center, a division of Hughes Aircraft, where he was part of a team that designed and manufactured a missile window that sits on Mars today -- he liked to say he had littered two planets. He co-owned and operated Goleta Auto Salvage in Goleta, Calif., with three partners, including lifelong friend Larry Tschappat, before moving to Newport, Wash., in 1977, where he had made his home for the past 31 years.

He married Sharon Dickinson Thomas in 1980. They divorced in 1991 but retained the friendship they had shared since 1964.

In Newport, he was the driving force behind the development of the Port of Pend Oreille, an inland port district, which enhanced the economy of Pend Oreille County.

He sat as a member on the Pend Oreille County Diversion Board for many years, believing that often it was better to give a young person a second chance than taking harsher measures. He was very proud of the opportunity he had to serve there.

Leaving a vacancy that cannot be filled, he will be missed by family and friends around the country and abroad. Dad's life was full; traveling to all continents but two. He was six stadiums shy of completing a goal to attend a game in every Major League Baseball park. A recent highlight was receiving tickets personally from Yankees' owner George Steinbrenner to sit behind home plate when the Yankees played the Red Sox. A trip to Costa Rica in June 2007 included riding the ziplines and sitting on the beach with a special friend, Sandy Nesbeitt. His grandchildren's favorite memories are Christmas shopping for the Tree of Sharing with Grampa and his love of chocolate chip cookies -- always available in his cookie jar.

His vibrant approach to life is admirable and an inspiration to those who had the good fortune to know him. This was again evident in his valiant fight against cancer.

Surviving are his daughter, Marnie Rebecca Mitchell; Marnie Elizabeth Colehour (stepdaughter) and Vernon Barnes (son-in-law and business associate), both of whom he loved as if they had been his biological children. He has five grandchildren, Sara and Suzanne Barnes, Ben and Lily Mitchell and Denver O'Neal. Neil was preceded in death by a sister, Rochelle; his parents; and a granddaughter, Shannon Barnes.
